I love sci-fi and indie authors, so finding Star One was a good day. The overall story is a good one - it was a bit of a mix of both the sci-fi space opera & possible end of the world genres. The science was reasonable and done in such a way that it seemed plausible & was understandable. One thing I did love was TEELA, the artificial intelligence that was becoming sentient & self aware. Teela's personality, comments, and antics were really well done and honestly, left me wanting a story just about her in some ways. There were some points that were mildly repetitive in places - conversations between one set of characters that were then repeated when one character from the first group met up with a second group, that sort of thing. It did not detract from the story overall though. I would strongly suggest this book to someone just getting their toes wet in the Sci-Fi world for the first time and it's suitable for a young adult audience as well now that I think about it. I'll be sharing Star One with my 12 year old nephew this summer and the second book in the series as well!

Nice adventure and fantasy. Problem was the editing of the book using spell checker. It doesn't differentiate between "there" and "their", found several error in the story based on this problem. Character development seemed 2 dimensional, especially the main villain, Senator Farley. The author appears to have the same appreciation of the US Congress as did Samuel Clements, recent performances there seem to substantiate their view points.
Five stars

I loved this book!!

This was a great book to read and I would highly recommend it to everyone. This is a book that both young people and adults will enjoy. This book is well written and does a great job developing characters and introducing a number of different plot lines that carry on through both books. I enjoyed this book and the next one, which concludes this story.

I have a number of favorite characters, which were easy to relate to. My favorite is Teela the AI. The politics on Earth when faced with impending disaster is a stark wake up call.
The science is easy to understand and well explained. I think the best way to enjoy this series of books is to read them one after the other. While the this book has some action, the next one is action packed. This is good science fiction and fun to read.
I have been reading a lot of SD lately. Few stories feel so real (although the last chapter of book 2 provides a kind off fairy tale end).
This book manage to provide a realistic view on the dynamic of geopolitics, the internal clashes of power, the fanatical views that deny reality, the fight for survival in a very nerve cracking style. Actions comes from everywhere, Moon, Star base, space craft and Earth.

the story is so refreshing that even non american readers like me will love it despite a such naive US-centric aspect.
I really liked the story line and the characters as well as the flow of the book but, there are few issues that I do have with the book. First, I don't know if the author was trying to make the book longer or that is just his style but, there is a lot of repetition in the dialog. Second, the obsession with the ample breast and deep dreamy eyes makes me think that Fabio will be strolling on to the bridge at anytime (joking). I mean, these are highly trained professionals fighting for the survival of the human race; it's hard to consider that they would be so preoccupied with staring down the tops of female personnel. I my very humble opinion; make the stories more concise and tone down the lust and I would read everything Mr. Weil would care to write. (I probably will anyway) Take a chance; I think you'll like the book.
Interesting premise but the writing is annoying repetitious and trite. Most books these days contain typographical errors but this one has way too many. e.g., "Affect" is a verb, "effect" is a noun. 800 AM should not be referred to as "0800 hours in the morning". These are just dumb writing mistakes that detract from the overall enjoyment of an otherwise promising story. A good editor could fix these problems, but it certainly doesn't look like one was used.
I really enjoyed this story. The author makes everything seem so real and believable. This is a story that would be enjoyed by readers of all ages. Anyone that likes science fiction or end of the world stories will find this a good one to read. There are several characters that are interesting particularly Teela the AI. The story is very well thought out and it is very easy to connect with some of the characters. The threat of the neutron star seems plausible and is very well done. There is just enough science to make it interesting but it is not overdone. I read this story one night and then the second one the next. When read together, they make for a very good and entertaining story. I highly recommend this to readers of all ages.
If you are looking for some action filled adventure this is not the book for you. It is an adventure for sure but on a more scientific level. The book tells of the preparations for trying to survive the approaching neutron star and the attempts to find out more about it.

The book is quite detailed in its description of the various small worlds that are the Tycho base and the Star One space station. It is definitely enjoyable to read about all the preparations and decisions being made. A lot of the characters are also very likable and well done.

In addition to the issue of the neutron star the space station have a rather entertaining problem with their computer system which have developed a bit of humor on its own.

Unfortunately any paradise seems to have its snake. Not surprisingly the snake in this case comes in the disguise of the usual political (a--hole) senator which mostly tries to sabotage the space program for his own personal gain. There are a few more snakes like the UN president which is an even bigger waste of oxygen in this book than the current real world one. I never like these plot elements but, luckily, the rest of the book overshadowed this nonsense.

I definitely liked this book and will go on reading the series.
