The Emperor of Nihon Ja Ranger Apprentice 10 John Flanagan 9781741664485 Books

I bought the first Ranger's Apprentice book at a University book store. It was sitting on the cheap racks, unloved and unwanted by sophisticated college students.

But what a find! These books are well written an interesting. This book, sent in Japan -- oh, I mean Nihon-Ja -- was pleasantly interesting and possibly the best of those I've read so far. The detail in sailing and battle tactics was gripping, the characters interesting, the humor unexpected and unforced, and the plot just right for children -- and, I suppose -- for me, too. It's an excellent book for a reluctant reader, and ideally suited for boys, since the characters and situations are primarily male.

Despite the fact that this is a series, you do not have to have read the other books to enjoy this one. The author ensures he gives you the background information you need quickly and painlessly.

There was a little swearing in the book, and I wish there had been none. This is a children's book, after all. But the bad language was minimal. Of course, if you read the book aloud to your family, you can always skip the profanity.

The Emperor of Nihon Ja Ranger Apprentice 10 John Flanagan 9781741664485 Books Reviews

Flanagan does a magnificent job in closing out a beloved series.

I highly recommend this book.

Before jumping into the review, I feel that some of the other reviewers missed the point.

This is a children's book. It's not supposed to be the great literary novel, and it is not a Sherlock Holmes novel.

Yes, Mr. Flanagan lays out most of the plot in the first two chapters.

Yes, if you are over thirty then you are probably going to figure out how the main plot plays out.

If you are in the 9-12 category then you will have inklings what is going to happen, but you'll probably be delighted with the story and the ending.

The heroes of the first nine novels are reunited one last time (including our Arabian friend from "Arak's Ransom").

Spoilers follow.

The orphans from the first novel all play their parts in this last adventure.

Horace is sent as a liaison to the court of Nihon-Ja to observe the military practices of the Nihonese.

While there, one noble rises up against the Emperor, because the Emperor believes in equality between the various classes.

Horace has to flee with the Emperor and his small entourage to a legendary fortress high in the mountains. The entourage grows as the Emperor's natural leadership and charisma gathers flocks of peasants to his banner.

The princess, who is sweet on Horace, travels across the sea to find Halt and Will, who are on their own military mission with Alyse. Will and Halt have been observing Flanagan's Roman equivalent demonstrating how untrained peasants can be trained to fight as a unit and defeat superior, trained individual combatants.

The four friends travel on with the help of a Skandian crew to find and help Horace.

There are several adventures on the way to Nihon-ja including rough seas and pirates, and there is an on-going squabble between the two young ladies over Will.

Horace and the Emperor have their hands full trying to evade capture while finding the mythical fortress.

Once the main body with Will, Halt, Evelyn, and Alyse arrive at Nihon-ja, there are further complications.

Will and Halt end up training the peasants with the Emperor to fight as a unit, but the Emperor still does not have enough personnel to fight and win.

So, the two ladies are sent to enlist a semi-mythical race of men from the north end of the island.

This gives Evelyn and Alyse a chance to bond and fight out their conflict to a resolution.

They face a serious, deadly threat and overcome it through teamwork and quick thinking.

In the final battle, Horace, Halt, and Will and the girls' plans come together to provide the victory against desperate odds.

At the very, very end of the novel, Horace ends up proposing to the princess, and Will ends up proposing to Alyse (with much help from Alyse).

All in all, it was a delightful novel that showed that friends can overcome disagreements, that equality and respect are virtues, and that love conquers all.

The evil folks were dishonest and evil, and the good folks were good.

Who could ask for more in a children's novel?

Love these books. The characters are amazing and feel sad that there are no more after the Royal Apprentice. I watched the interview done by the Author John Flanaghan and he feels that its time to let the series rest but I disagree. The characters he has created become so endearing and there is so much that can be done with Cassandra and poor Will...my heart breaks for him how about finding true love for him??? So even though I love his latest brotherband books I feel very lost and sad that I haven't got the apprentice series to read now and feel as though John Flanaghan maybe felt he was flogging a dead horse...yep am an aussie...but hey John you are such an amazing storyteller..give us the people who read your stories more of what we crave Pleasse)
A friend recommended this author to me. I got hooked with the first book and continued to read the whole series. The writing is clean and by that I mean he describes the characters and setting without being superfluous. I became attached to the characters quickly. They are the kind of people I would like to have as friends. The stories move right along, There are touches of humor which is always a big plus for me. When I finished this series I started the Brotherband series. I would highly recommend these books to anyone who enjoys action adventure books.
Flanagan might have produced his best book of the series with this one. I enjoyed it from start to finish as he brings the familiar elements that he created in the world into yet another strange but familiar land. While Will remains the main focus Horace really shines in this book as his character is pushed to the forefront on his own for the first time. Cassandra and Alyss also have great arcs and Halt continues to be awesome. The antagonist feels a little flat but with all the danger, action, and tricky situations our heroes are put in it is hard to put down.

I say the following to those who are buying the series one book at a time. Book 11 is a collection of short stories that reveals some of the past and shines a light on the near future for our characters but book 10 could have ended it just as well. Book 12 is set about two decades after this book and while it is an end to the series with Will getting an Apprentice it is a tonal change of sort and will leave many infuriated as well as entertained.
