Baby Doll Hollie Overton Books
It's an odd irony that for a novel dealing with some really uncomfortable issues, Hollie Overton writes comfort so very well. Sprinkled within a terrifying narrative, there are moments of such comfort and family bonding that I immediately wanted to check in with my sisters. I read this book cover to cover at one go because the pacing is absolutely perfect. It turns pages so quickly, and it does so with a clarity that grabs hold of the reader's hand and leads them through a complicated story so quickly and swiftly that I was so bummed when it was over. It made me love my family more, it made me want to put them all in my pockets and keep them closer. It's a great read.Tags : Amazon.com: Baby Doll (9780316268714): Hollie Overton: Books,Hollie Overton,Baby Doll,Redhook,0316268712,Thrillers - Psychological,Thrillers - Suspense,Abused children,Abused children;Fiction.,Abused women,Abused women - Family relationships,Abused women;Fiction.,Adult child abuse victims - Family relationships,Escape (Psychology),Escape (Psychology);Fiction.,FICTION Suspense,Psychological fiction,Suspense fiction,AMERICAN MYSTERY & SUSPENSE FICTION,FICTION Thrillers Psychological,FICTION Thrillers Suspense,Fiction,Fiction - Espionage Thriller,Fiction-Thriller,FictionThrillers - Suspense,GENERAL,General Adult,MysterySuspense,United States, babydoll; baby doll book; babydoll book; twins; twin sisters; domestic; kidnapped; teenage romance; psychological suspense; kidnapped twin; pregnant; domestic violence; abused teenager; novel about abuse; book about kidnapping; beach reads; mothers day; beach read; thriller with twins; books with twins; what happens next; books about escape; books set in maine, babydoll; baby doll book; babydoll book; twins; twin sisters; domestic; kidnapped; teenage romance; psychological suspense; kidnapped twin; pregnant; domestic violence; abused teenager; novel about abuse; book about kidnapping; beach reads; mothers day; beach read; thriller with twins; books with twins; what happens next; books about escape; books set in maine,FICTION Thrillers Psychological,FICTION Thrillers Suspense,FictionThrillers - Suspense,Fiction - Espionage Thriller,American Mystery & Suspense Fiction,Fiction,MysterySuspense
Baby Doll Hollie Overton Books Reviews
I enjoyed this book and found that I didn't want to put it down. There is bad language sprinkled throughout which I thought wasn't needed and a few sex scenes described but not in detail. I wouldn't compare this book to Gone Girl or Girl on the Train, I felt it was very different from either of those. It didn't have as much mystery as Gone Girl and was more involved than Girl on the Train. I felt the characters in this book were very interesting in the ways that they were different. I don't think I'd label this book as tense or a thriller or even that suspenseful but I did enjoy it and would recommend it (as long as you don't mind the occasional use of bad language).
How many times do you hear "a page turner", or like Gone Girl". Over it! Seriously I stayed up until I was falling asleep, I couldn't wait to read more. I was crying in the first few chapters. This got me right away, and I never felt I was flipping through pages of so many details to get to the actual story. No filler here! It starts off with a girl who has been held captive for 8 years and has a three year old child. She escapes immediately right in the beginning. What follows is captivating. What she goes through, her twin sister (who is a bad ass), her family, her first love, her daughter, and her captor. I couldn't believe this was her first book! Wow! I found this at the book store, as recommendations keep letting me down. I feel there is an agenda that I can't escape. Same books, same ok, or less than ok. Break free try this book, if the subject matter seems remotely in your area, buy it! I'm ordering her next one now!
Most books I’ve read about being kidnapped focus mainly on the captivity and not the escape, so I liked that this book began with the escape and focused on the aftermath...however, the aftermath just wasn’t realistic at all. The main character seems to overcome her abduction, torture, etc. fairly quickly & I don’t believe that anybody who has been held captive for eight years would be back to living a normal life so quickly. The main character has a daughter, but it seems the author didn’t really know where to go with that character - it seemed ever other page the daughter was “fast asleep” - the author really could’ve added a different perspective by including the daughter more in the storyline. I did like how the story was told from four points of view. But it just wasn’t a very realistic story, and the author seemed to try to throw in random twists and turns to make it thrilling but it just added to how unrealistic it was.
While this book held my attention to the end (I wanted to see what happened), I find that I agreed with more of the negative reviews on it than the positive ones. I didn't find any of the characters terribly sympathetic or likeable or even terribly developed over the span of the book. I know the point was to show them in the aftermath of a terrible event and their recovery from it, but regardless, none of them came across as very nice people. In addition, as one reviewer said, you were told everything rather than shown. You were continually told (by the main character herself) what a great mother she had been to her daughter while in captivity, but not really shown it or shown how an of these people developed for the better by the end of the book.
The first few chapters were the best in terms of getting my attention, but on the whole, the entire book was extremely choppy. I actually don't mind the constantly changing viewpoints since you learn how other people in the story feel, but again, it could been portrayed much better with "showing" rather than "telling". The last 1/4 or so just jumped from one implausible event to the next and that's where I really lost interest. I just started skimming to see how it ended rather than really reading at that point. I got tired of the characters almost whining about "where did I go wrong" and again, as one other reviewer said, Abby's (the sister's) constant ability to make everything about herself despite her claiming to be doing everything for her sister. Again, I understand you've all been through a terribly traumatic even, but do you really think a number of your decisions were the right ones given that you are supposedly rational adults? Mom thinking she DESERVES to take the married sheriff away from his wife and family after "everything she's been through in her life" and it's OK because she and her husband were having marital problems before her daughter was kidnapped in the first place. WTF??? Not exactly the rational thinking of an adult human being or a supposedly loving mother and decent human being, but it explains a lot of the other decisions all of them made throughout the book. There was a lot of juvenile thinking displayed by all the adults throughout the book which would be understandable from the main character who was taken when she was still a child of 16 herself, but not from the other supposed adults in the book.
I ended up giving this one 2 stars rather than 1 because I did enjoy the first half of the book reasonably well. Just lost patience with it by the end. Not sure I'd rush to get another book by this author.
Three things I have to say about Baby doll 1) I devoured this book in one sitting. I simply could not put it down. 2) Do yourself a favor and stop reading the reviews (they are spoiler heavy) and buy the book. You'll thank me later! The twists and turns stayed with me for weeks. 3) Someone please tell me Hollie Overton is going to write another book
