The Million Dollar Bond Robbery Agatha Christie 0057943460286 Books Reviews

January 1, 2019, was an especially happy new year for fans of perhaps the greatest mystery writer of all time, Agatha Christie. For, on that day, for the first time this century, new Christie works passed into the public domain and thus became much more readily available. These works included a series of short stories Christie wrote in 1923 for a popular British magazine of the era, “The Sketch,” featuring her now-famous Belgian detective, Hercule Poirot. One of those stories is “The Million Dollar Bond Robbery,” a delightful tale that showcases both Poirot’s deductive abilities and his eccentric personality.

The bonds in this story are Victory bonds, a type of savings bond issued by the U.S. government during World War I to pay for the war effort and still in fairly common circulation in 1923. However, a million dollars worth of those bonds (worth about $15 million today) represented a substantial haul for a thief. So, it’s quite probable that this robbery struck magazine readers of the day as quite a spectacular crime, and Christie’s description of the theft and its solution lived up to their expectations.

“The Million Dollar Bond Robbery” is not so much a whodunit (that’s pretty easy for most mystery buffs to figure out), but a howdunit. The bonds were in a package that was sealed in a locked trunk which a junior bank official was transporting to be invested in the United States. This being the 1920s, he traveled on a luxury cruise ship. The package containing the bonds disappeared from the trunk during the voyage, and a search of the entire ship and all the passengers yielded nothing. With suspicion naturally falling on the courier, his fiancée asks Poirot to investigate.

Since “The Million Dollar Bond Robbery” is only 15 pages long, Agatha Christie couldn’t make the mystery as complex as some of her novels were. Still, the puzzle is a clever one, but Poirot figures out how the bonds were stolen without ever setting foot on the cruise ship (which had returned to England) or examining the trunk in which the securities were transported. Instead, with the aid of his clueless assistant, Captain Hastings, Poirot interviews a couple of witnesses, does some outside-the-box thinking, and solves the case.

Of course, Poirot being Poirot, he doesn’t just solve the case; he also engages in his usual oddball mannerisms, chest thumping and self-congratulation, which irritates Hastings immensely but which a century of Christie fans have come to know and love. Christie toned down Poirot’s character in later years, but here he goes all out. At one point, he even proclaims, “Alas, I suffer the penalties of greatness.” Hastings may not be able to spot the clues in this story, but he does pick up on Poirot’s annoying behavior and even says “I’d give a considerable sum of money to see you make a thorough ass of yourself—just for once.” It’s not much of a spoiler to reveal that Hastings doesn’t get his wish, but readers will get theirs.

Christie’s Poirot stories in “The Switch” are somewhat of a mixed bag, as she seemed to be trying out various character types for Poirot. But the Poirot who solves “The Million Dollar Bond Robbery” is quite a polished product, and the story itself is a near perfect example of the impossible crime short story. In less than 15 pages, Christie sets forth the details of the crime, including a couple of key clues that could well pass unnoticed by most readers, and then shows how the impossible robbery was indeed possible. In addition to being a clever crime story, “The Million Dollar Bond Robbery” is a showcase for Poirot at his quirkiest. There’s no mystery here; this story is an example of Christie and Poirot at their best.
Hercule Poirot and Captain Hastings have another mystery on their hands when they have to solve the puzzle of a missing million dollar bond that has been stolen on it's journey to New York.

I like the short stories because there a lot of them, which means a lot more Agatha Christie for me to enjoy, and also because I usually have more success solving these than I do the full-length novels. In the case of The Million Dollar Bond Robbery I did guess the mystery before Captain Hastings. However I suspect Hercule Poirot had this one solved before he even heard of it!

My favourite line from this story "Good Lord, Poirot! Do you know, I'd give a considerable sum of money to see you make a thorough ass of yourself - just for once." I love the relationship between Poirot and Hastings.

This was another good Agatha Christie short story. If you haven't read a Agatha Christie novel yet, I recommend picking up one of her many short stories.
Love Poirot!!! and Miss Marple
Classic Poirot. Locked room impossible crime...falsely accused young man...collecting the facts...and Poirot cracks the case with the 'little grey cells'
A zippy, breezy read.
The ending was the same but in the movie that added a gambling issue. It was better without that. Great teaf👌😍
