Three Maids for a Crown A Novel of the Grey Sisters Ella March Chase Books

I enjoyed this author's writing style and perspective. Normally I would read books like this in a day, or two at the most, but I've been pretty busy lately so I haven't had much time to read. That said, I would definitely recommend this book. I have always found the reluctance of Jane Grey to be appointed queen and being forced to marry at fifteen a bit of a travesty. Women had no rights and were used as pawns back then. And being of royal blood makes the issue that much worse, especially if people wanted you to help their family take over the kingdom. This story was told over time through the perspectives of the three sisters. They all experienced grief and loss. They were all used by their parents to further the family's ambition and power. None were truly valued for themselves. At any rate, I found it tragically beautiful. The love stories of the two remaining Grey sisters, of Lady Mary and Lady Katherine, was emotionally moving. I felt their pain and the denial of true love by the crown. They had to marry in secret and hope to be forgiven, but Elizabeth was not a forgiving queen, at least from the perspective of the "sisters of royal blood". She always saw them as a threat and kept them imprisoned or in her service. I loved how Lady Mary Grey pitied Queen Elizabeth whose fear put her in a prison of her own making. Good story and worth the read for the take-away value alone. It made me think about the meaning of true love and commitment to family. I am glad I picked up a copy.

Three Maids for a Crown A Novel of the Grey Sisters Ella March Chase Books Reviews

The Three Maids were special in their own way! Each one blossomed into a unique personality. Three sisters who found Their own path with or without their sisters. I enjoyed reading their own story.b
I enjoyed this as well as any of the other novels regarding this era. Perhaps more, the sisters come alive with personality. There is something different about the way the story unfolds that made the book quite unique.
I know a great deal about Tudor England, and have read other fiction and non fiction books about Lady Jane Grey, this novel is a fast easy read, well researched, there are a few minor errors, but few would notice them, I loved the book, when I was finished I dug out otherbooks about the grey sisters, like "Innocent traitor" and the last Tudor, as my appetite for more about these unfortunate sisters , had increased
Especially noteworthy is the picture of Mary, the dwarf, entirely fictional, but fits seamlessly
This story confirms my belief that while life appears to be so wonderful for the royals of any age, I would not wish the life on anyone. They pay greatly for a supposed life of riches and luxury. I read the story almost straight through because I really wanted to know how the story ends. The follow up information at the end of the book was very interesting. I am looking for other publications by this author. If you want to read about the Tudors, pick this one up.
Some of these historical novels become encumbered with way too many
characters, becoming confusing and hard to read. Not the case with this
novel. It is simply well written and easy to follow, and you become involved with each character. I could not put it down. Loved it.
There seems to be a schism in the reviews of this novel where its historical accuracy is concerned. I had no problems with what I saw as being historically coherant with the "known facts". The author herself said that this novel is "based on historical events, but in the end it is a work of fiction." So if you are overly concerned about the issue of the poison gloves, choose something non-fiction.

I had always wanted to read a novel that told the story of all three Grey sisters, and I had tried several that were plodding and stiff at best. This, finally, was the novel I'd been waiting for.

Jane, Katherine & Mary are depicted as women who each tried to live their lives on their own terms - neither wholely successful nor wholely failing - but you can't help admiring them for trying.

The author has done a superb job in showing us the complex relationship between the sisters while remaining true to the overall historical accuracy of the time.

A wonderful read.
I really enjoyed this book. I have read many fictionalized versions of this era in history and I thought this one was very well done. The Grey family was quite tragic and I kept hoping they could just go on living as country women, especially Jane, but it wasn't meant to be since they were too close to the throne. The quest for power in those days was so strong that innocent people were killed for it. I would recommend this book if you are interested in Jane Grey, who ruled for a total of 9 days and then was be-headed for treason. Her two sisters also had horrible lives and were never allowed to be happy. The book also gave a whole different perspective on Elizabeth I, showing her as a jealous and vindictive woman, although she was obviously a great ruler in the long run.
